Rare Yoruba Dishes

Inline images 1
Abari

I had the rare opportunity of living with my grand mum for a few years as a young girl, and I saw her prepare so many unique dishes-some of which I have not tasted since then-let's say over thirty years. Ohh... that's a long time ago. Well she passed on fourteen years ago. I still remember her with nostalgia and I hope I would be able to bring back all those dishes, with a different touch. Are you Yoruba or are you omo iya agba (did you grow up with your grandma), i mean the grass root grandmothers  o, then you should remember soups like Ila alasepo,Orunla, Isapa soup (mostly eaten in Ekiti during festive period),Gbegiri and ewedu. Food like Egbo (made from fry corn), Otili (lentils), Ekuru(made from beans) and Eko, Abari(from corn) etc.

Moin-Moin Elewe

This delicious and nutritious meal is a winner any day. No week passes without my fair share of moinmoin. Abeg not the one in plastics or celophane o. I mean the original one-'moinmoin elewe'-the one cooked in leaves.

The aroma fills the whole space and leaves you asking for more (LOL! long throat). That's what I am talking about. Hmmm...delicious. It is nutritious and delicious. Made with any specie of red beans (olo 2 or oloyin) or the white beans; whatever, it comes out very tasty.

If you want to lose weight the healthy way without stress, just eat a wrap of moin moin and salad for lunch and salad or fruit for dinner. It sure works!

Join me in the kitchen where I made my own home made delicious 'moinmoim elewe'

Creyfish
1 boiled average iced Titus fish

2.Clean the pepper, onion, and crayfish and add to the beans. Blend until smooth.

3. Add the seasoning, vegetable oil. (I like heating my oil before adding. It gives the moin moin a nice flavour).

4. De-bone the fish and shred into small flakes. (Heard you could also add cornbeef, but I prefer the natural and traditional taste). Add to paste and mix together.

5. Make sure the leaves are washed thoroughly. Wrap the moin moin paste in the leaves and it is ready for the fire.

The Wonders of Lemon and Ginger - Miracle Drink

I was feeling a little off this morning-my stomach was blotted and almost didn't think I would make it to church, then I remembered a drink my brother-in-law made for me when I went visiting - Lemon and Ginger drink. He said it helps in burning body fat and helps the stomach.

Lemon detoxifies , alkalinize your body for fast weight loss and washes away toxins in the body.It is also a good source of vitamin C. It clears cold and eczema.

Ginger herb is used as a flavouring agent. It helps nausea, diahrrhea and stomach pain. It can be used fresh, dried and powdered, or as a juice or oil.

I made a drink out of these citrus and herb. Very nice. Let's go to the kitchen and see how I made it.

INGREDIENTS:

1 Big Lemon
Ginger
Honey (optional)
50cl warm water
Lemon and Ginger

Honey
HOW TO PREPARE:

1.Cut Lemon into 2 halves and squeeze out the juice with a juicer. Set aside.

2 . Peel the skin off the ginger and grate or blend until smooth.

 3. Add 50cl of warm water and allow to settle for some time. Mix and sieve out the shaft.

4. Add the lemon and honey (optional) and it's ready. Yipee!!!

This is how it looks when the drink finally settles.

I love the taste. You can actually prepare in bottles and store in the fridge. And it worked for my stomach and I feel better now.

Back and Better

Hello guys, it feels good to be back online. I've been away for sooo long-no thanks to my 7 to 8 job. I resume early and close late.

Still trying to lose weight o. Still a 16. No time, but I'm definitely going to be creating time for that and will actually feature it here once in a while.

If you could recall, in my very first post, I mentioned the this blog is going to be about food and health before I made a detour cos I needed motivation to lose weight. I would have gotten plenty of it if not for my laziness. Banking is not an easy job. Anyways, I'm back and better; driven by my passion- WRITING. It's been chasing me and I think I have to stop running and heed the call.

Apologies to those who had expected so much from me but were disappointed. To those who called me out...well, we can't all be perfect. I would make it all to you whichever way. I am striving for perfection. I don't want you to leave my blog, I need your support to create a JUICY blog.

Right now, I just want to follow my passion and make it beautiful.

This blog will be more of food, food and food. That was the original plan and I will try not to deviate any longer.

I pledge to be focussed.

Thank you.

HELP! I am Not loosing on the Scale!

So sorry I haven't been blogging. I have been so busy shuttling between work and the gym trying to loose weight. There has been tremendous improvement in my weight loss since I started two weeks ago. i was so excited to weigh in on saturday as my clothes were begining to lose their tight fittings on me. Little did I know that it would be shortlived.

I climbed the scale in anticipation of a 5kg loss, but alas! not a drop of kg. What is happening here. I take a lot of fruits and veggies so what happened to me? I was so downcast that I was beginning to blame myself for even venturing on this journey after two weeks of hard work.

I sat back thinking if I would ever loose anything? Please I need answers. Nelly, over to you o, you better read this blog and provide a solution too before I backslide. LOL.

No Pain No Gain

It's working, but it's not easy. Nobody said it was going to be easy. I just need to try and push myself harder to achieve my goal. I had to stop at the gym on my way from work.

I plan to stay true to this cause. No cheating. Like my son would say when I was learning how to drive,'Mummy, are you scared?  Don't be scared, you can do it.' And I did it! I have overcome most of the butterflies in my stomach having realised that there is really no fast rule to weight loss. What you do is what you get.

I have tried the shortcut so many times without success. I took herbs, which only made a fool out of me by sending me to the toilet literally every minute and everybody knew what I did. The latest one (picture of the bottle below) is my latest adventure that I bought off one 'Iya Alagbo' somewhere in Ikeja, which I would mix with lime and drink to reduce my tummy, but nothing happen. SCAM!

But now I know better. There is no magic. '...all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change has come.'Job14:14.

** So sorry, I'm having difficulty uploading my bottle of "Agbo" or "Opa eyin".
